munchausen by proxy is when they hurt the child munchausen syndrome is when they hurt themselves

Muchhausen Syndrome if you do it to your self or Munchausen Syndrome BiProxy if it's someone else doing it. Example- a mother making her child sick for the attention of "oh what a poor woman. her child is soo sick!"

Ernie was close...it's called Munchhausen by Proxy, and usually involves the harming of ones own children to get that sympathy and attention. Self mutilators are just plain nut jobs.

Masochism - deriving pleasure from pain; not a psychological disorder
Self mutilation - which is the act of hurting one's self.
Niether of which is an answer for what you asked

Many people who are depressed will hurt themselves as a cry for help. They can't come right out and say what's wrong, so they hope that someone will notice and care enough to help them.

There are also 'cutters' who don't do it for attention, but because their mental pain is so great it's a way to release it.
