Most simple answer, take the car to any shop and HAVE THEM INSPECT. A pre-sale inspection will run you between 20 and 100 bucks and is much cheaper than buying a car with transmission problems or a failing head gasket. Dont be a victim.

Yes. you should have it inspected if find one you fall in love with. But there are a few things you can check YOURSELF to eliminate some of the JUNK.

1. Look at the oil. If it's real black and feels sort of gritty, or smells like unburned fuel, it's WAY over due for oil change. The owner has been neglecting maintenance, and the eng could very well be shot.

2. With eng. cold, remove the radiator cap and look at the coolant. It should be bright green or red. The bottom of the cap should be CLEAN with no crud on it.

3. Look at the transmission fluid. It should be RED. Tan or brown is not acceptable.

4. Tires should be even with no weird wear or cupping.

If all these look good and you like the car, THEN get it inspected, and hope you do well. Good luck.

Buy a suscription to CAR FAX so you can check the cars Vin# history and accident reports and salvage titles. You might be buying a Katrina floater from LA or Alabama. Flood dammaged cars look normal smell like air freshener. J.P's Rule if the car was so good why are you not driving it now? Every one sells used cars because? It is not reliable! it some times does not crank over! It over heated and the stop leak only lasts two months! When you can buy NEW that way you know and have factory warranty. Besides wouldn't you look good in a brand new car?
