I'm thinking particularly about the younger grades where we can have a real influence on these young lives. Personally I’m thinking about going back to school and getting a degree in education.

If you are not a Christian feel free to butt out.

You would be a great blessing to those kids if you did that! There is nothing more important than learning about Christ! I'm not sure about other ideas to make this happen, but here is a good quote from Noah Webster (1758 –1843), who as you probably know is an American textbook author who has been called the “Father of American Scholarship and Education.” He said, “In my view, the Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government, ought to be instructed…No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people.”

Times sure have changed since our founding!

I think we need God more than ever in our school systems. And if that means just a caring, kind, Christian teacher then so be it. You know you will be going into a den of lions, though, don't you? The NEA and it's propaganda are too ingrained in this system. Besides you'll probably get sued for even mentioning the name Jesus Christ. I would teach in a Christian school. That way you won't have to watch your back every second of everyday. If I had kids I would definitely not have them go to any public school. Unless it was some small farm town or something where value and morals still matter.

as a school teacher I cannot express my personal beliefs but I can and will let the students see Christ in me.
I always say a prayer before school starts and pray for wisdom and Gods help each day.
I am one of two males in our middle school and these days many of the students do not have a male role model around.
I am a gym teacher so I see every student everyday and I make it a point to encourage someone that needs encouragement.
You would be amazed what some of the stories that the boys with single mom tell me.They really hunger for a male to listen to them.
One of our students comes from a very rough home life and has been very rude to me and the other teachers, the other day he did not have lunch money and I offered to buy him lunch. He had that look like " would you really do that for me ? He smiled and got up to get his lunch.Ever since then I have noticed a change in his attitude towards me.
It's funny what $1.50 can do ! :)
I encourage you to continue your education and become a much needed christian school teacher.
God Bless ! !

You sort of answered your own question. What you could do is stop thinking and start acting.

I am a Christian. I have taught school. I didn't look at it as an opportunity to bring people to Christ but as an opportunity to teach them English composition, which I was hired to do.

That is, when you are talking about influencing young lives, you might want to consider what your place is in things first. And also consider your own power. To be clearer, if you are on some campaign to get more Christian teachers in the schools and believe that this will in some way solve some sort of problem you see, you are already engaged in an "us vs. them" mentality, and in a mentality that says, "If only I have some influence, things will be better in the world."

You might want to ask God for humility, clarity, and direction before charging ahead on your campaign.

In this country that is a blasfemy. Talking religion in schools here is the ultimate offense. They will throw you in the deepest dungeon throw away the key, erase your name from public monuments in shame and dishonor.
In the comunist countries, like Poland, after finishing classes, the teacher took the children to the nearest church to thank God for what they had learnt that day. Here , in the country of freedom, God is forbidden in schools. Instead, children take machineguns, knives, bombs, etc, to school and kill as many people as they can, but don't worry, nobody was teaching religion.
You can kill, but you cannot teach about God

We do have thousands of wonderful Christian teachers in our Public Schools, but they are limited on what they can say/teach about religion. Many times, irate, parents come to the school to make sure their child does not participate in Christmas and other Holidays. While the other children are singing Christmas Carol's the poor children who do not believe in Christmas are sent to the Office , until the party is over. How is that damaging the poor kid, who doesn't understand it all ? Non-Christians have really caused many problems. Then think of their children who do not understand and is afraid to tell their parent, that they want to learn about God.

The challenge is that no matter who you are or what your faith is, you're still bound by the school's curriculum and rules. You can't arbitrarily start indoctrinating young children into religion because it violates the school's codes, unless you are teaching at a christian school, in which case they probably still have a curriculum you need to follow.

School Teachers hands are tied rather tightly when it comes to what they can say and do in the classroom.

There are some Christians that should be committed. I am referring to Becky Fischer {Jesus Camp} actually She should be put to death.I am Christian, have lost faith in humanity.I am not supposed to judge, however she is a child abuser, cruel, very sick
Jesus loves the little children,God forgive me,I can not turn the other cheek on someone who harms defenseless children

So you can impose your religion on impressionable children. This idea shows what kind of person you are. If you have to brainwash and control children to continue your religion, then maybe you should consider the evil (yes, evil) that you are doing in the world.

Maybe with your degree in education you might take a few ethics classes.
