While my heart lies with Lee, Jackson and Patrick Cleburne the most General for the south would judged in several categories leadership, tactics, judgment, respect and courage to name but a few.

Being a Southerner that makes it a difficult decision and it would be Nathan Bedford Forrest. First with no education or training, he became one of the most respected and fear leaders of the war. He showed amazing courage and resourcefulness at Fort Donelson, when he escaped the surrender. He showed courage over and over but the most memorable to me was when “he” charged the Union line at Pittsburg Landing. His action on June 10, 1864 at Brice's Crossroads is studied in military academies around the world. Time and time against he routed superior Union forces the fact he had 30 horses shot from under him shows he led by example and lacked neither courage nor initiative.

I am not a balanced historian as I find little respect or understanding with Union men. I cannot understand how they could have fought against their brothers and fellow soldiers when the South was exercising her rights and a right both sides had exercised just years before in the Revolutionary War. John Reynolds was one if not the only exception. He understood the South’s’ views and actions but felt he had to remain loyal to his Army. As one of his subordinates once said, “Your young friend has the general’s high regard, and he is the idol of his men”. He was the essence of energy and a soldier and was held in high esteem by both his comrades, classmates and foes! Reynolds always showed himself without fear, without reproach, and without an enemy. He was shot and killed at Gettysburg.

The most important Generals were Grant for the North and Lee for the South. I do not base this on their military victories, Grant was not a great General but he had the will and guts to win. Lee was the better General but he did not have the resources, and remember he lost.

The reason I think these two were great was how they behaved at the end of the war. There was pressure from the North to punish the South, there was pressure from the South to start a guerrilla war.

Grant and Lee just wanted an end. Grant threatened to quit if he was forced to take a punitive action against the south. Lee convinced the others that enough was enough.

If these two men had not had the foresight to end the war the way they did the conflict might have continued indefinitely and the States may have not been able to come back together.
