To protect our borders from illegals crossing it and the smuggling across of contraband and drugs. Living in the post 9/11 era, they are on the lookout for terrorist as well.

US Customs and Immigration have many and various roles including facilitating entry for cargo and people into the United States. They are basically the first line of border defense and attempt to catch narcotics, copyright goods and terrorists (to name a few roles). All Customs and Immigration officers are trained to detect possible offenders. Extensive training is undertaken.

To get screwed over by their own government like the Border Patrol Agent who is now going to prison for shooting an illegal in the rear end who was trying to cross the border with drugs. Google it if you don't believe me.

Don't waste your time trying to get into Law Enforcement. In about 10 years, there won't even BE any laws anymore. Cops will be the "bad guys" and people will run rampant.
