Last year sometime, I let someone borrow a book, not someone that I know very well. Is it reasonable to expect to ever get it back? Because I called and left and message for them a few weeks ago and haven't yet heard anything. What should I do now? Just chalk it up to experience or keep persuing my book?

That person is probably avoiding you; call from a pay 'phone (in case that is the case, and the number won't register on the 'phone's Caller-ID) and ask the person when you can expect the book to be returned. Do that if you REALLY want the book returned. Alternatively, send the person a reminder via regular mail and let him/her know that you want the book returned.

Next time, do NOT lend books out to ANYONE. Not one book that I've loaned out has ever come back in the same condition, not the paperbacks or the hardcover books. I stopped lending books and I do not lend CDs (I also NEVER borrow anything from anyone... not ever!). OTHERWISE, chalk it for lost and learn from the experience.

You are absolutely right. Unfortunately, sometimes we don't know our friends are careless with our belongings when they borrow them and treat them badly. If you know from experience that you have a friend or two that do that, don't loan them out again. There's nothing more gross than when someone gets food or drink on the pages of a book, or folds the edges, or tears a page, or does some other careless thing. In spite of that, I'd probably give a person a chance, but once they are inconsiderate with my books or other belongings, I'd never loan them things again and I would tell them why in a nice way.

I had to stop loaning books for that reason...it's almost impossible to get one back. If you do, it's probably been messed up. Once when I was in high school, I let a TEACHER borrow a book I loved; she finally gave it back to me, like months later, with red nail polish all over the cover. And then she actually asked if I had anything else I'd loan her. As if.

If they're a friend of a friend, find out from that friend where they live..."I got your address from _______, since I hadn't been able to get ahold of you on the phone. I needed to get back the book I lent you a year ago...."
Or if you don't want to do that, keep calling. However, you can probably kiss that book goodbye. That's one of the reasons I don't lend people books - that and they dogear the pages, which I hate. I'm sorry this happened to you, best of luck getting it back.

Best Regards,
Holly

I would say that loaning a book is like loaning money, give it out as a gift to people you know will use it wisely. And if you get it back, be suprised.

Break into their house and steal it back!
While you're there, you might as well take a some other things too!
If you get caught however, just don't go blaming my advice!

You could try calling again, but take it from me-- it's like there's a curse on books. You loan one out--you will NEVER see it again. Sorry.

If you would like your book returned, be persistant. The book is yours. They should respect your property and return it to you when you ask them to.
