My sister is griping and complaining about this incident today in which I went to work and left the chainsaw gassed up and ready to go for my nephew to come over (he lives down the street) and cut up a tree that had fallen in the backyard. We agreed that I would give him 10 dollars for this. He's a nice kid I and plays baseball so he has good hand eye coordination. Besides, a month ago, he said he liked my chainsaw and asked me if he could play with it. I showed him how to crank it up and handed it to him and he was just having a blast. Well, anyways now my sister (his mom) calls me up this afternoon after he told her he was using the chainsaw and got some woodchips in his eye. Hey that isn't my fault - i left the safety goggles for him, but you know kids - they think they are invincible. Anyways, the kids okay now and he learned a valuable lesson to use safety goggles. Now my sister says he isn't allowed at my house for a long time. I just feel so wronged here.

are u stupid or what? u dont give a 9 year old a chainsaw... im 31 and im scared to use one.... they are very dangerous and he could have gotten hurt... im happy your sister wont let him over anymore.... i would have kicked your fu*cken a$$...

How old are YOU? Are you nuts? This is about the craziest thing I have ever heard! I don't blame your sister at all. What if he accidently hit some part of his body with a chainsaw? Have you EVER seen anyone get hurt with one? Well, I have and it WAS NOT pretty at all! No 9 year old should be "playing" with a dam chainsaw. I can't believe you would do something like this to YOUR nephew. Were you hoping for him to get hurt OR killed. Don't mean to be mean but this IS and WAS STUPID STUPID STUPID !!! You wronged your sister, not the other way around. She TRUSTED you with her child. Hell, he could had been killed! Nine is young to use such a power tool unsupervised.
Admit to your sister you should have made sure he was supervised to save family peace.
Obviously this nine year old is competent and you must have shown him how to operate the tool the first time he expressed interest but it is easy to forget when kids show interest and capabilties under supervision that operating dangerous power tools by anyone under the age of 18 is actually illegal in most states. Check the user manuals most tell you not authorized for use under xyz age.
She is right to be angry, a serious accident could have happened- but then again it could happen to you as well as an adult. You should really check with a parent before allowing a child of any age under 16 to complete any work for any reason even money and especailly if they would be exposed to something potentially dangerous. She may have consented but come along to watch him for safety reasons.
Just think how awful you would feel had he hurt himself while you were not home doing such a task. Then you will know she is justified in her anger.

You've got to be kidding me.This has to be a made up story,or the stupidest question I've read.
If this question is true then you have no right being around your nephew.Who the hell lets a 9yr old play with a chainsaw,especially when he's alone.Unless your trying to start Halloween early.
If you were my brother the only way you would see your nephew is when you were being supervised.

BUT you DID leave safety goggles out for him, i'd say it was both your faults.
