Buddhism
Now one of the world's major religions, Buddhism is based upon the teachings of Siddhartha Gutama Buddha in reaction to the animism and pantheism which were common in India at the time. The principle beliefs of Buddhism are expressed in the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.

There are three main schools of Buddhism today. the first is Therevada (Doctrine of the Elders), which is the surviving form of Hinayana, or Lesser-Vehicle and can be found in Ceylon, Burma, and other areas of Southeast Asia. The second is Mahayana, or Great-Vehicle, and can be found in China, Korea and Japan. The third is Vajrayana, or Diamond Vehicle, and can be found in Tibet and some surrounding areas.

In India, where Buddhism originated, it can now only be found in very small numbers.

Four noble truths:
Life is (contains) suffering
Suffering is caused by desire
To eliminate suffering, eliminate desire
To eliminate desire, follow the noble eightfold path

Dependent origination:
Everything in the universe is a complex web of cause and effect, things only exist because they are caused, and nothing has an independent autonomous reality (I always find it easy to see this by imagining a tree as not a tree, but made up of all its individual molecules and the energy joining them).

Kamma:
A particular instance of cause and effect, skillful intentions and action have good results, unskillful intentions and actions lead to bad results.

Theres so much more, including things like 12 links of dependent origination, 12 links of the spiral (out of dependent origination) 8fold path, 5 precepts. Its all good stuff, no dogma and unneccessary rules etc. Best way to find out is read a book - 'a simple path' by the dalai lama is good, as is 'the buddhist vision' by alex kennedy.

One the main concepts is that there is an inherant path people must travel to release themselves from suffering. Recarnation is also a central concept
