They are separate, or they should be at least. Of course, religious leaders can affect political thinking, but there should be clear divisions--especially with moral issues. I believe it was the late Pierre Trudeau, former Prime Minister of Canada, who said the government has no business in the bedrooms of the nation. Same holds true for churches. Religion should provide guidance for those who want it only.

I am an atheist. I think it is good to be involved in politics no matter what faith. I also think you should bring your sense of morality with you and vote according to it. That does mean that religion will have influence over politics.
Where Christians cross the line is using that voting power to force your faith on everyone else. It is not fair to use our tax dollars to promote your religion and that is often the case and things like spending tax money to erect ten commandment monuments is in that category.
I admit it goes too far at times the other way. Having store employees not being allowed to say "merry Christmas" for instance is drivel as far as I am concerned. The line to me is that you don't want to have the state sponsor it. It is perfectly natural for you to. Just don't be offended if I think it is silly because I do.

If you don't get involved to hold up a standard of morals, they will taken from you. Let it go to far and they will make church illegal. The U.S. was formed because people were not allowed to have a church of their own beliefs. We are moving to that. The country becomes more immoral every year. We don't expect everyone to follow our beliefs, just to acknowledge that we have the right to believe them. They claim we push our views on them. I for one, have never forced my faith on anyone.
There are people in this nation who have no faith of any kind, and think that we should abolish religion from the world. When you talk taxes and other laws not directly affecting the definition of morality, you should use your own judgement on whether or not to get involved. If we are talking homosexual rights, abortion, freedom of speech, etc. you better get involved. If you don't, don't complain about the situation you put yourself into in the future.
Our political system was made to protect the rights of people to believe in their own religion. I don't want a theocracy, but I do want to have my voice heard about issues that affect me and the morals of the nation that I see flushing them down the toilet for tolerance. China kills baby boys because they are overpopulated. It may sound cruel, but it is just a government policy to keep things in check. Your faith affects your vote (or should anyway). I don't want radical changes, I just want the imprtance of family and values to remain. Ask your parents or grandparents if they think church's should stay out of polotics. They have watched the nation go from what is was to a moral free fall that it is today.
Tolerance of immoral laws will affect you! Yes get involved.

God's kingdom is not a part of this world. And religion should not mix with politics. History is full of examples of what happens when religious people start trying to use the power of the state to enforce religious decrees.

i don't know...i think it should be a personal choice.. we are the church not the building made up of individuals.. it should be up to each one of us since we also belong to the communities and countries we live in...yet Christians should not place politics before God for that is idolatry...we are Christians first members of society second

I have yet to hear of any church running for office.
but for a serious answer to your question.
if a church preaches or tries to influence to congregation on political views they then lose their non profit status.
