People never are prepared for a young dog to pass away, they always think they have a long time to go. It's harder when the dog dies young, and it might make you nervous about getting a new dog.
We foster for a rescue group, and we can spot the sad faces from a mile away. We hear the most sad stories, and the ones about young dogs are generally the sadist.
But just remember, you have no way of knowing a new dog won't live til 20 years old, so don't let your being scared of losing a new dog chase you away from loving another. When you feel ready, find a new furry friend to love.
Grieving is a personal thing, and don't feel bad no matter how long you take. I have seen people adopt a new dog within days, and others wait years. You will know when it's time, or a furry smiling face will melt your heart and let you know it's time.

Your dog would not like to think of you being sad. You should get another pet and take care of it. A few years ago I had a wonderful dog and he got very sickly and died. It was HORRIBLE and it took a long time to grieve and to be able to walk around the yard where he once lived. I bought some books about animals and if they go to heaven and that helped me allot. The rainbow bridge message is also something I look forward to meeting up with Oliver again and going over the bridge. Plant a tree in his memory. You will always remember him, but you have a place in your heart for a pet and it should be occupied.

Friendly Hello, I am so sorry for your loss. I do know the feeling you are going through as I lost my best friend of old age. I remember looking into his eyes they seemed almost human like the day I had to drop him off to be put to rest at the vet. It pierces my heart still to this day and it is over 10 years ago. I would recommend finding a breed like your old dog or a mixed breed that was similar and bless your life with the love that a new family member can give you. Blessings, Kelly

Don't rush to another one. Dogs are like people in that they are all different. You can't replace the dog that was special to you with another one. Take some time and then get a dog not to replace the one you lost, but one you want because of the special qualities you see in the new dog that you will be getting. You owe that to the dog you lost and the new one you will be getting later.

When my dog, who I thought was healthy, had a stroke and died suddenly, I vowed not to get another pet but, like you, I could not get over it. I started going to shelters and pet shops (just to look) and one day In a pet store I saw a dog that was the same breed as my pet that died. I asked if I could hold him for a few minutes and once I had him in my arms I could not let him go. I will never forget my pet that died but I love my new dog dearly. It was only when I held him that I could stop crying.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Get another dog. It might sound mean at first but it REALLY helps!!! When my dog died getting another one really helped. I'm sooo glad we did! I cant imagine life with out Duchy!!
meg is partly right. it's not like losing a family member but it is still VERY sad. You can't just "get over it" . When my dog died it was one of the saddest things in my life.

Remember all the good things about your friendship with your beloved pet and then get another one in its honor .....there is another one out there that needs you ...
Old dog in a locket
That lays next to my heart
I will always love you
As I did right from the start.
You were right beside me
Through the darkest of my days
It was your kind and gentle nature
That made me want to stay.
Now I hold you in my arms
Your breath still warm against my hand
Our hearts still beat together
And I wonder if you understand.
Through the hours that I held you
Before the light did leave your soul
I knew a way to keep you
Forever in my hold.
I snipped the hair from around your eyes
So I would always see
The beauty that surrounds me
Even in times of need.
I snipped the hair from around your ears
So I would always hear
Music in the distance
To quiet my fears.
I snipped the hair from across your back
To bring me strength in time of need
And the power of your essence
Would always be with me.
I snipped the hair from around your heart
That beat in time with mine
So I would know that love would find me
At some distant time.
And so, your life slipped out of mine
On a quiet Spring like day
But I knew that a part of you
Was always here to stay.
Old dog in a locket
That lays next to my heart
I will always love you
Even though we had to part.

I'm sorry, sweetie. It's very hard to lose a member of the family. I planted a beautiful flowering shrub in the spot my dog most liked to lie outside. I also got a new pup, and he has helped me a lot. He didn't replace my other dog, but he has been a friend while I grieve.

Get a new puppy. It will help you move on. Do you think that your dog would want you to still be sad about him passing?....... No he would want you to realize that hes in a much better place now ( chasing cats probably in doggy heaven) and that its time to move on and give another pup a chance at a wonderful life.
