There is no kind of food that is not eaten in New York City. I mean, besides the fact that every conceivable ethnic group has food stores and eats the food that they introduce there, other ethnic groups also eat the foods that others introduce.
Maybe you mean what kind of food is most popular with people in New York City? Well, there are different situations to consider. A lot of people eat what is known as "street food." That's the stuff that one finds in carts on the sidewalk, like bagels and cream cheese, or danish, and hot dogs and other sausages, and there is pizza sold out of windows opening on the street, etc., for people busily walking to and from work and walking to do their work. Then the other extreme is the Night Out on the Town, so that would be some kind of restaurant, and so it could be something as low-end as Chinese take-out places that also let you eat in, to something more fancy like a famous steak house or a famous [insert ethnic name] cuisine place, and there are the way, way, way high-end places, too.
It's a big place, it has whatever you want, and you can eat yourself to death on anything there is in the whole world.

New York city probably has every food under the sun, as there are people from all backgrounds. I love the cheese cake, the bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon, lox, and the apple pie "a la mode" -apple pie served with vanilla ice cream, instead of the English custard.
The part of New York state I know, offers normal fare, with a mix of chain restaurants and diners.

New York is multi-cultural , therefore you can find anything your palate desires! Restuarants are everywhere in the city, from Indian, Thia, Italian, French, Mexican, Vegetarian, Organic, vietnamese, Dominican and American. If you visit New York you won't be dissapointed.

The same kind of food you eat anywhere else. I live in the west coast and went to NY and they have the same stuff they do in the West Coast.
