Vanilla bean is long like a uncut green bean and is then ground up and that's what the black dots are in the ice cream. Tahitian vanilla ice cream is the best. Some fancier dessert places like Villa Crema put ground up espresso beans in some of their vanilla ice creams too.

The little black bits that you see in French vanilla ice cream are pieces of the vanilla bean, from which vanilla is extracted.

Ground vanilla.

Vanilla is a spice, it isn't naturally white as cheap vanilla ice cream would lead you to believe.

It comes from the vanilla bean when they grind it up in the icecream.
