Sunday is considered the first day of the week in the western calendar. This comes from two separate parts of our western heritage. The first is Judeo-Christian. In Jewish tradition labor occured the first six days of the week, and the last day, the Sabbath, was sanctified (set aside by/for God) as a day of rest. Saturday is the Sabbath, the end of the week, which makes Sunday the first day.
The second is Roman/pagan, part of the creation myth of the cult of Mithras. Mithras was the personification of the "unconquered sun". His "day" was Sunday (day of the unconquered sun). Since he was part of the creation (the beginning of all things) his "day" was first. Christians seized on this similarity (unconqured sun became the "Unconqured Son"), and they changed their day of Worship.
There is no reference in western tradition of Monday having significance as the first day of the week. It is translated from the Old Norse "Montag", which has no significance as a beginning. Their first day of the week was "Sonntag" (Sunday); also the "day of the sun".
