Before taking this label, shouldn't a person explore all other avenues like excercise, talk therapy, thyroid check, sunshine etc? What else should one do? Taking on the label of mentally ill or under treatment for psychiatric condition is a big deal.

there are certainly many solutions to mild to moderate depression. Explore the ones most palatable to you.

There's at least one study that shows getting a massage once a week is just as effective as anti-depressants.

Aerobic exercise is quite good as well.

Yes, it's a big deal, but you also need to learn to deal. Depression, and especially bipolar depression, is a biochemical condition - it's not situational. And even if you DO have situational (instead of biochemical) depression, you need to realize that it's NOT a failing on your part. It's not a sign of weakness or lack of character.

You can't just "snap out of it" when it's depression. There are lots and lots and lots of websites that talk about this, so you should educate yourself.

NOTE that I'm NOT saying you shouldn't get a second opinion, if you want - but I don't go in with those people who might tell you that "depression" is a Big Pharma scheme and not a real condition or illness.

Good luck!

All except the thyroid check are part of psychiatric evaluation and treatment. We no longer put the mentall ill in asylums chained to the wall. Get to treatment early and prevent suicide.

If you see a psychiartist they will evaluate you. They are a medical Dr so they can check all avenues for you, including thyroid and other blood work. They look at the pysical and psycological aspects of whats going on with you.

Taking on a label is no big deal, if a person has real depression they need medical help.
