The first thing that came to mind when I read your question was that you have an illegal copy of XP. When XP was first released, it had a corporate version that was widely hacked. Later, Microsoft released SP2 and disallowed this particular version of XP from getting the Service Pack. This is by far the most common reason for being unable to install SP2. Do you have this illegal corporate edition? Go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/whyValidate.aspx to find out.

It should be pretty straight forward, go to the microsoft website download the service pack and start the executable file to begin the installation. If you mean it is taking too long that is normal, it takes quite a while to complete the install. without more info I don't know what to tell you.

You can have Microsoft mail you a service pack 2 CD for free. Go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

I ordered one and it arrived in the mail 4 days later.

sp two has known issues with many computers. check the manufacturers website for patches. on most hp and dells all you have to do is type the serial number and voila....you can hunt your downloads automatically...if the manufacturer has the auto tool to auto detect use that its easier. fxxx microsoft...there about as helpful as herpes...again, stick with the manuf. website
