******You are NOT supposed to smoke with the patch on!! Even after removing it you should wait at least 2 hours or more before smoking. It states that in the package insert. You can have an overdose of nicotine and cause heart problems etc.*********

This is funny for me. I'll tell you why. I had been having some problems feeling weak, short of breath and mild chest pain. I had been seeing my doctor for almost 2 months. We were havingtrouble find the problem. My doctor thought it was a lung problem partly because I smoked 2 packs/day for 26 years. He really tthought it was that and TB. I kept saying ok but what about the heart. After several tests on my lungs he gave in and sent me ta a cardiologiest. The cardiologist tested me and found some concern but nothing major. Yet to be sure he wanted to do a heart cath on me. OK! Went to the hospital on Oct.4, 2006. The cath was done. Fom the cath lab, I went straight into the operating room where they did open heart surgery and put in 5 bypasses. The last cigerate I had was 5 minutes before I walked into the hospital. I am bipolar and was taking Paxil for that. My heart surgeon stopped my Paxil and put me on Wellbutrin. Wellbutrin is another antidepressant but it also helps curb the smoking addiction by decreasing your cravings and nicotine withdrawal effects. BUPROPION is the generic name and it is also sold under the brand name Zyban as a smoking deterrent. You might try to get your doctor to prescribe it for you. You can use it as well as the patch or gum.

By the way you are really supposed to "quit" smoking before you use the patch or gum. Right, if you could quit first why would you need the patch. Also you can wear a path for a full 24 h0ur period. Try putting it on in the morning and leaving it till the next morning. They are designed to release the medication over the entire 24 hour period. And for those really strong cravings, keep some of the gum handy. My brother quite using the gum and patch at the same time. His doctor had suggested that.

Well that's my experience and knowledge on it. I wish you the very best of luck with this. I hope you never have to go through what I have this past week and a half.

Sincerely,
Terry

Nicotine from a patch continues to enter your body transdermally for a few hours after removing the patch. Unless you are using the weakest patch and want to smoke the very weakest cigarette, I highly recommend against smoking while using the patch or you may get far too much nicotine into your system. You can get really bad headaches and much worse from a nicotine overdose.

You should be able to use one at night while you sleep. Many brands are ok for that. Plus there is one fun bonus to sleeping with the patch on. You will get the most amazingly vivid dreams you've ever had.

I am not a supporter of nicotine patches and some people in the industry wont like me saying that. I gave up smoking more that 2 and half years ago..The first day was the hardest, and I didn't sleep well that night. After the third day, it didn't matter anymore..I gave all the cigarettes away. Strangely though, after 2 odd years..the cravings NOW appear quite bad at times.. BUT, one thing I DO KNOW..whilst I gave up smokes over 2 years ago..I am NOW..2 years later (NOT while I was smoking) suffering the affects that smoking causes...such as Difficulty breathing, Lung problems etc.Emphysema

They don't recommend that you smoke at all while wearing the patch. You can wear it 24 hours. Read the package though, I had some weird dreams from wearing it at night. So, when I took it off at night and put it back on the next morning, I was very unsuccessful at quitting. Good luck, I hope that things go well for you.

I don't think you're suposed to smoke while you wear those nicotine patches. It's like doing what you are trying to quit while you are in quiting.

last I checked, you can wear a patch 24-7... even when you sleep. And, apparently it's bad for you, just like everything else in the world, but I smoked sometimes while wearing the patch

Ok, well both of my parents are on the patch and they tell me it doesnt do anything to help them. They both smoke while they are on it too. Nothing has happened to them. So If it helps you keep the patch on all the time, that way you wont have those cravings. But if you have anymore questions you should ask your doctor. Well smoke break. Bye

as soon as you want... there are studies out that say if you wear a patch and smoke for 2 weeks before you actually quit smoking your way more likely to quit... you will want to smoke less but i guess it helps you break the addiction of putting a cigarette to your mouth... i thought it was pretty interesting... i read that in the packet of info i got with my knock off walgreens patches :P
