It goes back like it was before. Its usually torn and needs to heal for about 6 weeks. But after then it all goes right back into the shape it was before.

Just like when you poop, your butt doesnt get any bigger, no matter how constipated you get, or how big a poop you take. ITs designed to stretch to fit. Same with a vagina.

my friends and I had this conversation at work the other day.............. My friend,Sue, happened to mention she'd caught sight of herself in the mirror bending over( with no clothes on) and that's when she realised that after the birth of her daughter 3 years ago , she had now been left with something resembling an elephants trunk! I personally was butchered with a scissor happy midwife during the birth of my 1st child 17yrs ago, when it was common proceedure to perform an episiotmy whether you really required it or not. My under-carriage is like something out of "Alien"! We all had very similar stories to tell! However, I now know that midwives take great pride in delivering babies and the mother not needing any stitches. In which case there should be minimum change to the vagina and labia minora/majora. It's very important to start pelvic floor excercises asap post - delivery....this could make all the difference!

You will probably need stitches as my daughter was only 5lb 7 oz and I still needed 2 stitches. The stitches are dissolvable and dissapear within a week ot two, the midwife will come to check though to see if you have healed over nicely. You are advised to do pelvic floor exercises and before leaving hospital they give you a sheet of what to do, they are quite straight forward and its things like clenching your vaginal muscles (you can do this anytime of day and nobody knows!) some hospitals even run classes on the exercises that you can do before you are discharged. Providing you do these exercises you vaginal walls will stregthen and you should go back into shape, if you don't do them you will find you become very loose and saggy and it can cause you problems later in life. Don't stress a good midwife will advise you all the way.

thought my recent experience might be encouraging. have had 2 natural births with no tearing or stitches at all. decided to have a coil fitted. was lying prostate legs in air while doctor prodded around my nether regions making lots of aah and umm noises. feeling a little uncomfortable i asked if all was well down there to which she asked the question had i any children. yes i replied, two. she asked were they c-sections, no i replied both natural births. why do you ask i said. to which she replied your very tight down there. so either my vagina has simply returned to normal or it's shut up shop.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
