Everybody else pretty much covered putting the burn into COOL not ice cold water. The reason for cool not ice is that the ice water can cause more damage to the injured area. Then DO NOT ever apply butter or any type of greasy ointment to a burn of any kind. That will just increase the severity of the burn because it tends to hold the heat in and make the burn deeper. What do you do to fry foods? You add grease!! Once the burn has cooled down, if there is NO open wound, you can apply a burn gel or cream. Take a couple of Motrin to help with the pain ( and call me in the morning...lol). Seriously, never pop the blisters as that opens up the "door" for infections. If you have more than a simple blistering, go to the doctor for treatment. At night, you can cover the burn with a loose dressing to protect it. They do make saline dressing that you can buy over-the-counter that work great on burn and speed up their healing time. They also help to keep the open burn clean and free of infections.

Run some cold water and then fill the glass and stick your thumb in it. It will burn for a while but not while its in the water. Just keep it cold not frozen. Do not put butter on it .It has salt and that's not good. Just do the water and you will be alright.

steam burns are very bad. if you are close with your doctor call, tell him adn ask him to prescrib some Silvaden cream - stuff is wonderful! cooling it down and keeping it clean is about the best you're going to do with a steamburn. the butter, might cool t to start and the lotions too, however they have various things in them that can cause troubles. bacatracin (aka neosporin) also does pretty well.

Cool it off. Running cool water is best, but a cup of ice water is OK (don't use ice water for too long at a time, though).
Avoid all ointments, lotions, etc. None will really help.

run cold water on it. now. that will prevent more damage.
After that, you can use aloe vera to soothe it and help take the burn out.
