I have a macaw and I know macaws and cockatiels are two whole different things but I'll try to help you as much as I can. First of all, I chose the smallest bird and got bigger. On the info you've asked what I've had, I lied actually. These are the only birds I have had.

1. Zebra Finch named Chilly. He couldn't talk and live 2 years.
2. Yellow Canary named Cindy. She tried to but never could, 5 years.
3. Budgie named Mottee. He learned 2 words which were hello and bye. They were never that clear. He lived for 4 years.
4. Cockatiel named Lacy. She said love you. She lived for 7 years and I loved her!
5. Nanday Conure named Speckles. He never talked because those were busy years. I got rid of him when he was 3 years old.
6. African Grey named Pablo. Got rid of him, gave him back to PetSmart.
7. Flamingo in Florida named Pinko. We got rid of him when we moved and then I got this next bird.
8. Blue and Gold Macaw named Sandy. She is 10 and got her the day before we moved. From a breeder when she was 2 months old. She is 10 right now. I taught them all how to talk by repeating words. Sandy can sing 2 whole songs. Ball Game and Twinkle Twinkle. And oops........she learned the f*** word from me so let that be a lesson. And she learned b**** and I hope my baby only hears the songs at night AND day. My cockatiel squealed too. Did it sound like mixed squeals saying arroo kind of. If so then yup, he said yes.

I have an 9 yr old cockatiel named skylar, and he says alot of things like, good morning skylar which he learned to say because every morning when I uncover his cage I said that to him, and now he says it. He also says nite nite, and good boy skylar, and also he says "what you think your doing" he says wake up, he also whistles andy griffin all the way through when he wants to, sometimes he just does part of it, he also wolf whistles. and when I give him a treat he says " thank you" and also whenever I ask him what are you doing skylar he says nothin. He learned all these things just by my continuing to say these things to him every day, OH he also says I love you. You can teach them to say just about anything if you just be patient and show him attention and whenever he does do something always praise him like saying good boy and clapping your hands, they seem to understand that you are really proud when you do this. Good luck and hope that your bird gives you as much love and joy as mine gives to me.

You just have to keep talking to your bird and persevere, you will know yourself when he is talking because you will recognise the syllables and words you have been teaching him. In essence, you will understand what hes saying and be able to distinguish it from when he is just squawking or whatever. Hope this helps. Just pray to God he doesnt learn any naughty words... Like mine lol.

Put him in a room with a peacock.
If you take a hot shower, one should grow out of your left arm.

But make sure you put something down to protect the linoleum.
