No, you are not burning muscle, the ideal range in which to burn fat is 60-80% of your maximum heart rate (MHR), any higher than that is muscle and endurance training. Your max. heart rate is 220 - your age. For instance, I´m 28, so my MHR is 192, so my ideal fat burning heart rate is 115-153 bpm. You ideally should work out in this "zone" for about 40-60 mins.

"the lady" at the gym is full of ****. When your heart rate is up to the point where you can barely talk, you're working out in the "cardiovascular zone". This is what will help your stamina. Suprisingly, the "fat burning zone" is l;ess intense. Your heartrate stays lower and you should be able to talk comfortably.

You are, however, not working out right if you only do cardio and dont work with weights.

not at all. She shouldn't be working at a gym.

Next time you're in, look at the heart rate chart on the treadmill. It will give you an idea of where your hearrate should be for your age. There is a fat burning zone and a cardio zone. By brining your heart rate up higher (within reason) you are helping your heart and cardiovascular endurance.

How high are we talking about? You really need to get it up to about 140-160 and sustain it for at least 40 minutes. Then you burn fat. I don't know what she is talking about--burning muscle??

I have never heard of such a thing! She doesn't know what she's talking about! Your heart rate is fine - you have to get it up there and keep it up there to burn fat. You can't burn muscle from exercising!!!!!!!!!!!!! How stupid!! I would report her!!!

you have 3 types of muscle fibers, first type is used for long distance low fatigue exercise, second type is for power, used for lifting, jumping, any type of exercise where u need more force against resistance. the third type is adaptive, it adapts to whatever type of exercise you do most. she might have been talking about that. if you're doing more cardio, you 3rd type is going to adapt for the long haul exercises, not ones that need more muscle.
