I am not married yet, but after marriage, rather than going on birth control, I would like to go on the "Rhythm Method," or something close to it. My period, however, is very irregular. I have been told you can't do a method like that if you are irregular. Is that true?

I am living proof that the rhythm method doesn't work! I would very much suggest another method of birth control, but you can combine some with the rhythm method (like using a diaphram when you are less likely to be fertile and not having sex at all when you are).

That being said, there are some pretty sophisticated methods out there for detecting ovulation these days, mostly for people who WANT to get pregnant, but I don't see why you couldn't subvert that paradigm.

I think it is important for you and your future hubby (after all, he's half of the equation) to consult a family planning physician or nurse. Planned Parenthood is really great for this, if you do not otherwise morally object.

Good luck.

You are going to get pregnant that way. Use birth control if you don't want to have kids right away. The rhythm method doesn't work.

Well I am married and we were using the rhythm method and it worked for about 4 months now I am 9 mon preggo and miserable waiting for this child to get out of my body. I guess we have no rhythm(haha). I will be geting my tubes tied, but I already had a child prior to this one and one is a boy and one is a girl so that is enough for me, but for someone that doesn't have kids and doesn't want them I would suggest the I.U.D. they have both with and without horomones and stays in for 5yrs.!!!!! Ask you GYN about it.

There are other methods of natural birth control- you might check out the Billings method http://www.woomb.org/bom/index.html
Talk to your OBGYN about it and pick the method that works best for you and your husband.

I wouldn't risk the rythm method for contraception. There is semen in pre ejaculate so you can still get pregnant...so you might want to reconsider your birth control method

I wouldn't risk it. I got pregnant so easily with all 3 of my kids! Do something, maybe the patch? We used condoms until after my 3rd and my cute husband went & got snipped! :) Now, that is the way to go!! God Bless you!

Well if your period is very irregular then your ovulation times vary so it would be very risky to do it that way.

Don't risk it. The rythm method is tricky even if your periods are regular.
