I'm a Montessori Pre-school teacher and work in Greenwich CT on weekends. I charge $15 an hour up to 2 kids, $20/hr for 3 kids, and $25/h for 4 kids. I won't handle more than 4 because it's irresponsible without help.

I'm a professional nanny, so for me I'd get at least $10/hour - for a family that I wanted to help that didn't have much money, I'd probably offer to do it for $7/hour.

OTOH, I watch a close friend's 2-yr old for up to 4 hours one day a week, and I only charge her $25 (so about $6/hr - I guess I'd offer the other family the same deal - as long as I wasn't giving up other paying jobs for it - and in that case, I might do it for even less).

I babysat for a couple when i was in high school. They didn't have the money to pay my regular rate 5. per hour per child. They had 2 kids so we worked out an arrangement and I got like 75.00 a week. But I watched them during the summer and had them from like 7:30 am to around 7 pm. Just talk to the parents and work something out between them.

Well in fairness to both the family and yourself $4.00 hour and $1.00 for every 15 minutes there after. If it is two children than the flat rate is $5.00 hour and $1.00 for every 15 minutes there after. That is what we pay and if you are asked to babysit and they cancel the same day of sitting then the flat fee is applied. That way you are compensated and you are more likely to come back when they need you again. One thing to keep inmind is this is a business. Another think is be careful to accept terms of payment at a later date. Their payday is your payday. To often the babysitter is the last one to be paid, and the first one to be called. Have a little book on hand to record times of drop off and pick up.

Federal minimum wage is $5.15 per hour, so that's what you should get. I would charge $7 an hour, though (but I live in New England where costs are very high). It depends on the cost of living where you are, but it should be no less than $5.15 an hour.

My kids are all grown but the young Mom's in my neighborhood say they are paying 5 bucks an hour. That is a far cry from when I babysat four kids ranging from 1 to 8 for 1 buck an hour.
