I just got my 8 week old shih tzu and hes wonderful! but i got him alot of different toys to play with, but he doesnt like playing with them...all he wants to play with is my feet (with socks) and the end of my pants. Its weird haha. I really dont mind, its just that when i leave he wines and gets bored because he has nothing to play with. I'm trying to play with him with the toys, but he just gets excited with my feet and starts playing with it..he ignores the other stuff. What can i do?!

My Shih Tzu (who is 2 and a half) does the exact same thing, . he also wines alot, but yours should get better as he gets older. Mine has, i think they are just a playful breed.

I have a three year old Shih Tzu named Daisy. She loves to play with my feet too. She growls at my feet and tries to make me move my feet. When I do not want to play the game then I just tell her no. This method usually works for me. I read that when a dog wants to play with you in an inappropriate way then just tell them no and give her a toy instead. When you catch her playing with a toy than say “good girl” or give her a treat. Try only using the toys when you want to play with her. Playing with your dog in this manner will encourage her to play this type of game more often. I believe dog owners have the responsibility to teach their dog good social skills.

When he started playing w/ your socks and pant leg you should have said no to him. Since you did not, that was encouragement and saying it was ok for him to do this. To train a pup you need to be consistent, if it's a habit you don't want, you must learn to say no at the beginning. To correct the problem you start by saying no and keep giving him his toys until he gets it. As for the whining, try not to give in and check on him every time he whines or this will become a problem.

Wear some bunny slippers and buy him a bunny chew toy, he wont be able to tell the difference! If that doesn't work, try sprinkling a bit of cayenne pepper on your socks. Your feet will then be his enemy.

I highly reccomend getting the dvd at www.dogsbestfriend.com. It is regarded as one of the best dog training books (in dvd form a book is also avail) around.

In the mean time I'd try going barefoot with shorts on and trying to get him to find a toy he likes, try stuffed plush toys...
