My Chihuahua just gave birth to 6 healthy pups. At first we thought it was only one, but when we moved the blanked, we saw three. There were two black ones and one white one. But soon after we found out that it WASN'T two black ones, but three. That's 4 puppies. As soon as we saw the puppies, another one came along, and we left the room to give her privacy. We were shocked! Five puppies! When we came back a few minutes later, my mom noticed that she was licking herself too much, and asked me if another had been born. We check: 5 black ones and 1 white one! That's so many puppuies.Six nipples, six puppies! How can we take care of them and will all of them survive?

That's a BUNCH for a Chi! My folks normally get only 2 or 3 at most. Congrats. You shouldn't be leaving the mother alone though while she's whelping. Always want to be there in case of complications. At least everything turned out OK though. If Mommy doesn't have enough milk you may have to give some of the puppies formula every 2 hours but if at all possible get as much of mothers milk into them for it's antibody's. If they all appear healthy, then they will all survive. If they need help, do it!!! That way no lives are lost.

The average litter for a Chihuahua is 2-4 puppies.

If for some reason it seems that one of the pups is not gaining wieght, you might want to supplement that pup with some replacement milk to help the mother out. Make sure that no matter what, you give the mother calcium supplements so that she can produce enough milk for everybody, and also feed her a puppy food (again for the extra calcium & vitamins) until she weans the puppies.

WOW!!! That's lot of puppies for such a little dog. I think it's very unusual for for a chi to have so many pups. Bless her little heart. The poor thing must be exhausted.

Are you sure she's not a Great Dane? LOL. Sorry , I couldn't resist :-)

I'm sure she'll do fine and I hope all the puppies do well too. Good luck with them all.

I work in a vet clinic and have seen many dogs have many more pups than that. Everything should be fine. I'm assuming you didn't get an xray at 57 days justation?? Next time (if there is one) it's a great way to know (or at least approx.) how many pups your ***** will be having. One thing to keep in mind is that you may need to help the runt of litter out a bit and make sure he/she gets their share of food!

Get a postal scale at your post office and weigh each of the pups daily and keep a record. If any are not gaining weight they are the ones that will need supplemental bottle feeding.

make sure all seem to be getting enough to eat from momma, you could try getting some puppy formula to SUPPLEMENT only the pups, they need the antibodies from mom, so they;ll need to nurse, if you need help, call your local Vet and see if anyone would be willing to help you out, I've had to do that before with a litter of stray kittens that were found...

Yes, but they usually only have two or three, so you are going to help a little with the feeding. With an eye dropper and warm milk if by chance she can't handle it.

If they are all currently healthy, they will most likely survive.
