The NIV says, "repentance from acts that lead to death". Which basically means repent, or turn away from actions and behaviors that are not of God. Those actions that lead to death instead of life.

Within the context of the verse "repentance from dead works" refers to the time when as an unbeliever I acknowledged that all of my works were dead,... in my act of repentance, which means "a change of mind" I take sides with God against myself and avail my self of the second part of putting faith toward God. The writer of the Hebrews is encouraging the believers to move toward perfection or better rendered maturity. This is why he is asking them to lay aside elementary teachings and move toward the things which should be seen in a mature growing believer. The contrast is: before conversion our works were dead in contrast to after conversion we are alive in Christ.

Hello John,
Actually, Heb. 6 vs1&2 need be read together. Basically the passage says, (paraphrased),
We must quit reinventing the wheel. We don't need to keep asking 'repentance from the deadness of our former ways.'
ie. We've sought that forgiveness once, and now we must move on. Continue to mature in Christ. Move forward.
Does that help?

When people are spiritually dead, their works are dead also. Jesus said to see the Kingdom of God, you must be born again. That means spiritually reborn.

We die spiritually when we rebel against God like the first Adam. We are made in God's image, body soul & spirit. So when we spiritually die, we lose connection spiritually to God. So we must be born again.

Once we are children born of God, we have that spiritual connection where we can pray to God 24/7 in spirit & truth. Then the works we do are out of Faith, Hope & Love and are everlasting rewards.
