That people share 96% of their DNA with rats on an amino acid level. Which is probably why human populations are so resistant to viruses. Just like a rat population, there will always be a small percent of that population that will be immune to any given virus. When that virus kills off all of the people or rats that are not immune; the ones that are immune will survive and have off spring that is immune to that virus. The population will replenish it self and you have a whole population of people or rats that are immune to the virus, but it's a vicious cycle because there is always a new virus that's right around the corner. You can see evidence of this when the Europeans came over to America and passed on viruses that the Europeans were immune to. The Indians were not and there population was decimated.
