unless you are soon to die avoid Grange over Sands - it seems to be a place where people just wait for god.

Smooth Hounds http://www.smoothhound.co.uk/ won't recommend a place but are a internet directory I have used and never found a bad guesthouse/b&b using them.
The Youth Hostel Association http://www.yha.org.uk/ will have clean, well maintained youth hostels in the Lake District with knowledgeable experienced staff.

The place you need to go is a hotel called the royal oak its in a place called rothswaite just past borrowdale.Negotiate with them because you will get a good deal.The views are fantastic.the food is good old fashioned home cooking.You can take a dog with you if you have one.The bar is quiet .Just hope yu have a good time its beautifull there.
