taxi is not expensive in China but there's a lot of traffic in big cities like Shanghai - if you want to go to the provinces next to Shanghai, better by train - as u know, China is a big country, so if u to another city, better by plane.

you can go to any provinces and cities in China freely. I recommend Hangzhou and Suzhou near Shanghai - good place to know Chinese cultrue - u can go there by train or long distanse bus.

any more info about travelling in China - just send me E-mail

We were in China last year and we traveled by plane from Beijing to Shanghai. The only thing I can tell you is that taxi service is tough there - they really dont understand English - you'll need to have your hotel concierge write down your destination in Chinese. The problem that we encountered is that the taxi drivers did not drop us off exactly where we wanted them to. They dropped us off at taxi stands where they can pick up other fares! So good luck with your trip.
