Can we just "add on" to the existing foundation? Will the tiny space (if any) between the existing and newly poured slabs cause problems in the future? What other caveats are there to consider? Thanks for any info!

Yes you can add but there may be two things you may want to do first dig a new footing around the perimeter of the new concrete and then drill holes horizontally into the existing slab and insert re bar in the hole to attach the new foundation too this will keep the new slab from sinking into the ground and both will say at the same height
