LOL it blows my mind some of the answers that people give for both.... I'm guessing you were asking about Karate and TAEKWONDO. Both are good martial arts. Both have things that you can benefit from. Taekwondo is NOT ALL ABOUT KICKS and just for the Olympics. It has gotten a bad name over the years from people. Neither is an offensive art.... so BOOOOO instead of cheers.... Both practice self defense... not self offence! Try some of them out and see what you think.... do NOT rely on the people on here.... most will tell you some cracked out art like Krav Maga which you CANNOT train effectively without going all the way. Or something like kung fu.... Do what you feel will help you.

EDIT: Ignorance is bliss huh spider?

Karate is from Okinawa (not Japan); it later traveled to mainland Japan and was stolen by the imperial Japanese. This is a traditional style of unarmed combat that developed in secret as the people of Okinawa were not allowed to have weapons or study fighting arts. It is a hybrid of kung-fu (southern white crane) and the indigenous art of Okinawa simply called Te (hand). Karate is far older than Tae Kwon Do. The focus in karate is improvement of the character and self-defense. The signature feature of this striking style is the defense which can be used offensively.

Tae Kwon Do is not karate.
TKD is from Korea. It is no where near as old as karate. It is not a traditional art of Korea. It was developed when Korea was occupied by the Japanese. The Koreans watched karate then secretly imitated it. The kata are the same as karate as proof of this.
TKD is a sport art; not a martial art. Their primary weapons are their kicks and many of their techniques are geared for tournament competition not street use.

Please do not confuse these arts. To the uneducated eye they appear similar but to the expert the difference is as apparent as day and night.

One is a sport the other is a system of self defense. Please learn about the lineage of a style before you train in it. You may spend years learning a sport when you really wanted a martial art. Or vise versa, one is not better than the other; it is a matter of personal preference.
If you are looking to train please remember that the quality and frequency of training will far outweigh the style you train in. Find a good school not a good style ( just make sure you research the style so you are not studying some thing that is bogus like some energy manipulation garbage.)

They share some common ancestry in Shaolin boxing. Both are striking styles. Karate is originally from Okinawa, Tae Kwon Do is Korean. In general, Tae Kwon Do uses more foot techniques, both in number & variety. Okinawan karate in particular, emphasizes mostly hand techniques & they fight from a horse (or horseback riding) stance a lot. In this they are much like southern Shaolin boxing. Tae Kwon Do has more in common with northern Shaolin boxing. Japanese karate is in between. There are some technical differences in the execution of some techniques, but that's too much detail to get into here. There are many forms used in both Tae Kwon Do & Karate, especially the older 1's, many originating in China.

besides the fact that they come from two different countries.

Karate (two Japanese Kanji; Kara meaning empty or open, and te meaning hand) is the General name for the several different types of Martial Arts that're associated with, and originated from Japan and Okinawa Karate is often one of the most balanced disciplines of the Martial Arts as a whole.

there are several Martial Arts associated with this term. Goju-Ryu and Shotokan are a couple of the most notable or popular examples of Karate.

Tae Kwon Do is one of several Korean Martial Arts, (the entire word meaning the way of the hand and foot). 80% of this discipline is based around kicking techniques, and the other 20% is dedicated to hand techniques, and it is widely considered as a Traditional Martial Art.

Unfortunately since Tae Kwon Do's induction into the Olympics about 30 to 40 yrs ago it has garnered the stigma of being a sport and often an ineffective discipline in many circles of Martial Artists around the world but this is simply not true.

Both Tae Kwon Do and the many disciplines of Karate are quite popular in the tournament circuits, but they are BOTH effective in their own right, but also have their own respective strengths and weaknesses

the biggest difference is their country of origin, but essentially they are the same since their techniques were originally developed in China; but their respective founders who first learned the techniques evolved the techniques further to what the disciplines are today.

They're almost the same thing.

Karate is from Japan
Taekwondo is from Korea

There are many types of Karate and Taekwondo so you can't really make generalizations about them. Also, taekwondo is the most practiced Martial Art in the world (thus it's an olympic sport)

Tae Kwon Do literally translates as the way of the smashing foot and is an art that focuses primarily on kicking and fighting. Karate literally translates as "open hand" and is a traditional style of martial arts focusing on humility, tradition, hand techniques, and Kata.

Mainly, Tae-Kwan-Do uses more kicks than punches, so this mean that you'll use more your flexibility. Karate uses more punches (to say the truth I only know two kicks on karate: mauachi and mageri) Also, tkd is from Korean Origin, K is from japan. TKD was used to fight and unificate korea, K was used by samurai-men when they where unnarmed. well, there are also differences on attacks (duh). TKD has also cool kicks and jumps. A Sparring of TKD is more cooler than a Kata from Karate. so, thatssss alllll!

Mainly, Karate comes from Japan and Taekwondo comes from
Korea. Karate, I understand means "Open Hand" as it is used alot for striking others. I was told much of Taekwondo came from the need to develop a method to dismount horseback riders who were attacking, thus their ability to kick very high, including the spinning kick!
