Right...lots of good suggestions here.....fleas can be controlled quite easily with the right product, if you worry to much about expense you will continue to have a flea problem, hit the problem hard now and you will get some control.

Avoid the pet shop products, they are simply not strong enough to do the job right.

Your vets is the best place to start, simply because they are licenced for the strong products.

To kill fleas you need to break their life cycle somewhere in the following: eggs, larvae, pupae and adult fleas.

Frontline is very popular and can now be brought over the counter at the vets and over the internet, this will only kill the fleas on your pet. You need to get the eggs in the carpet to hatch by hoovering alot which will then develop into fleas and then back onto the cat, to be killed. This can take some time (maybe 3-4 weeks) and leaves some pet owners with the impression that the product is not working! This is not the case! if you want to speed up the whole process, get a house spray too, most good house sprays will protect the enviroment for about a year! Apply frontline every 5 weeks to stay flea free.

Frontline also comes in a pump action spray.....cats are not too fond of this, but works instantly on adult fleas.

The vets also sell Frontline Combo, this is only licenced to be sold by the surgeries. This works in a similar way to Frontline but treats the adult fleas on the cat and breaks the flea cycle in the carpet by inhibiting the development of the eggs, larvae & pupae laid by adult fleas for 6 weeks after application. This is more expensive then Frontline, however it is an all in one product so it will be. Very popular with vets and owners.

Stronghold is another very good vet only product as it treats for Fleas, Biting Lice, Ear Mites, Round Worm, Hook Worm & Heartworm. (It does not treat for tapeworm)

There is also Advocate, a product I am not so familar with these days, but treats fleas, ear mites, heart worm, round worm and I suspect hook worm.

I would also advise that you treat your cat for Tapeworm as the flea is host to this worm and when the cat grooms itself it will injest the flea which will result in your cat getting tapeworm!

Routinely you should worm your cat every 3 months, check with your vet which flea product can be used with which worm product as not all are compatable.

I hope that this information helps you and good luck

defiantly frontline. u can get it from the vets!
i tried absolutely everything u can buy from a pet shop but the little buggers always came back!
its only slightly more expensive and it truely is the only one that works. by the time u have brought every other brand, u have spent much more than u would have done buying frontline in the first place
also it lasts for ages so u dont need to buy it very often!
i thought the same about it being too expensive so ended up trying it as a last resort. i would never use n e thing else now.
hope u give it a go!

Frontline PLUS is good. Frontline regular does nothing pretty much...lol. Advantage is good also. If you go to your vet sometimes they can give you a single dose instead of a 4 pack....here in the US its about 5 dollars for a single dose. Not expensive at all. After using either product buy a flea comb and comb out the dead fleas....if not you could still think the cat has fleas but it is really just dead ones left over.

First I would take your cat to the vet and have it flea dipped. While it's there, get some flea bombs and bomb your house. Or what I did that worked was get some Raid Flea Spray (it's a purple can) and spray your furniture, rugs, baseboards down. You'll also want to get some Borax laundry detergent and sprinkle it on your carpet. Let it sit for an hour or two and then vacuum up. Not sure how it works, but it does. I had a really bad flea problem years ago and tried the borax and Raid Flea spray. It worked. As long as your cat is treated, you shouldn't have any problems. Good luck.

I used Frontline and my little kitty bits got fleas anyway. I use Revolution on my dogs--it works pretty well and I think they have a cat version (I think.)

I tried everything else--sprays, collars, dust, shampoos, drops. I read in a book about Greyhounds that when all else fails, get two containers of warm water, one soapy, one clear. Dip a flea comb in the soapy water, run it through the pet's fur, dip it in the clean water. Repeat. The little sucking bastards will be choked by the soap and the pet will be clean and tidy and pest-free. It's fine for any animal, even sensitive ones. Also, try lavender essential oil (mix w/water and spray on, about 5-7 drops per ounce of water.) I've heard of it as an old-school herbal remedy, more for repelling fleas than killing them.

Some cats are just real flea-bait--it sucks (literally and figuratively) that you got a tasty kitty that all the fleas wanna bite. Good luck with that--my kitty's an inside kitty now. She hates it, but it sure helps with the fleas!

Frontline is the way to go. You can get cheaper Frontline over the Internet and some drug stores carry it cheaper. Hartz puts out a serum I haven't tried yet and is 1/2 the price.

Also pet stores carry Frontline.

I had the same problem, but commercial treatments are rubbish. I really recommend you get something from your vet, yes it is expensive but well worth the money.

Remember to treat carpets and the cat's bedding with a powder or spray and put the bedding in the washing machine too. The commercial house treatments work OK, so that shouldn't be too expensive.

Best thing to get rid of fleas is to treat your house and just flea powder or shampoo your cat as the fleas live more in your carpet/furniture than on the cat.

Cant remember the name of it but bought a spray for the house in pet smart it worked well but had to do it twice just to be sure.

Frontline plus. Its not that expensive and it works. what you have paid for products that didn't work have you cost more then you would of paid for frontline. And the fleas would of been dead in 24 hours.
