My pekingese is 9 wks old and keeps chewing on fingers and toes. She has a tone of toys and doesn't chew on them. If I put tobasco on my fingers and toes will it stop her and will it hurt her stomach just to lick it?

My wife and I bought a lab when he was 8 weeks old. I spent the first two, maybe even three weeks playing with him and intentionally doing anything I could think of that would make him bite me. I'd hold his favorite toy and wave it in front of him down where he could reach it, he would run at it but then bite my hand instead of the toy. I would squeel loudly, grab the toy, stand up and ignore him for a few minutes. After a few minutes I'd go back to him and pet him and let him lick me. I'd repeat it again until he realized it was biting me that was the problem. He stopped biting so that he'd get my attention more.

I kept repeating it over and over. My wife is a nanny and our puppy is now 7 months old. The two year old she nannies for can hold a treat and he carefully walks up and pulls it from her hand. He never bites.

I think the key was that I did it repeatedly, and I'd do it if he bit me intentionally, or even obviously accidently. The key was for him to learn that his teeth should never touch a human.

It may just be labs are more of a people dog though.

It may upset her stomach, although the likelihood of her taking more than one or two licks of pure Tabasco isn't very high. If it were my puppy, though, I'd look at the possible reasons why she was chewing and then do something to correct the problem

Her gums may be bothering her, or she may simply be comforting herself with chewing on a familiar, friendly substance -- i.e., you. She's still very young, and her toys might not hold any appeal for her, or she simply may not understand what they're for.

Instead of possibly burning her mouth with Tabasco, how about correcting her firmly but gently when she starts to chew on your fingers? Tell her, "No!" or "Pfui!" or whatever correction word you use, then hold her mouth closed for a few seconds. Offer her a chew toy immediately afterwards, so that she gets the idea that they are OK to chew on.

And maybe you could make her toys more appealing, too. If she has a small Nylabone, try putting it in beef or chicken broth and letting it boil for awhile. Give her a small Kong toy filled with peanut butter or soft cheese, and have fun watching her try to get it out! Or lightly sprinkle other toys with garlic powder, which most dogs seem to love.

Sorry for such a lengthy reply, but I hope this helps.

dogs taste things differently than we do...try a trade off...every time puppy goes for the tootsies, give it a gentle scruff and shake, say firmly NO!! then give it a raw hide chewy and pet it saying good dog good dog....use repetition and routine every time....puppy will get the point, she's got to learn NO and good dog anyway....plus momma will grab a pup by the neck when it angers or upsets her....it wont hurt, scare maybe, but not hurt.

tobasco is not good for her. you can go to pet stores and get spray thats bitter or hot that she will not like. or just tell her no and move your hands and feet away from her
