I have ADHD, am in my mid twenties and once I started taking medicine (Ritalin) for it my entire life changed, along with therapy it was like a window opened. I am actually concentrating and I love it.

My neighbor is a Scientologist and once she found out is trying to convince me to come to her Scientologist center for a test, and wants me to get off ALL my medication even my asthma inhaler, she says ADD does not exist and I have bad thetins or something I need to get out.

I said my medicine is working very well and it has NO side effects except for decreased appetite. She keeps asking me to come with her to the center and said I might have to bring a few hundred.

What do you think? i don't know a lot about Scientology but my mom hates her

Ignore her. Scientology is just an elaborate scam for its creators to make money - nothing more. In order to move up through the heirarchy of the "religion," and be told new lies, you have to keep giving them money for "counseling" session. Supposedly the top-level "information" involves aliens that are trying to use mind control to take over the world. But the worst part about the whole scam is that they encourage mentally ill patients to reject proven medical treatment in favor of trying to rid themselves of alien invaders. Really, stay far, far away from scientology.

Does your neighbor have a PhD in psychology, neuroscience, or biomedical sciences? Does your neighbor have their M.D.? If not then rest assured that the body of scientific knowledge that is published probably far outweighs the opinion of a single scientologist. Science is collected and the published so that the methods, outcomes, and methods of analysis are open to the critisim of other scienentists. The ultimate goal, finding the truth. That's it. No hidden agenda. I encouage you to do your own researrch on ADHD, perhaps by contacting your nearest university library and asking for help searching through their electric archive of psychological journals. Just remember, no scientist will ever tell you what to believe, they will just point you toward the existing data and allow you to form your own opinion.

i once asked a friend who reads even more than i if he
had read l ron hubbards' book and he answered no, but
i've read some of is other fiction. i think that holds true
for the whole scientology thing. some of l ron hubbards'
other fiction. tom cruse claims the religion has kept
him from having colds; well i'm not a scientologist and
haven't had a cold in years. going off your ritalin like
your neighbor wants will only make you dysfunctional,
going off your asthma medication could very well kill
you and all she or l ron hubbard would say would be
too bad she didn't believe enough. with friends like
that you sure don't need enemies.

RUN!!! I was in hollywood with a friend a couple of days ago actually, we were just walking around at like 9:30pm, because we were going to a show, and we pass by this museum that TO ME, looked like some sort of Halloween exhibit, and in big letters above the door said "PSYCHOLOGY IS MURDER". To me and my friend it looked interesting (even though we both were wondering why a museum would be open at half past nine at night) So we go in. It's free, which made us even more excited, so a woman at the front desk gave us ear phones and led us into a sort of theatre, that looked like one of those rooms they stick crazy people in that's padded, and they proceeded to show us a movie from congress where a psychologist was asked to provide information on characteristics of symptoms proven to be ADHD related, and it took him 30 minutes to ramble on with no definitive answer. Then that ended, and we go into another portion with slides and movies, movable models of the torture devices that psychologists from the 1800's used to use on their patients, how psychology was related to the Holocoust, even a display showing all the actors, actresses, musicians, etc, that had some sort of overdose, or saw a psychologist right before they died, etc. GRANTED, the museum was very informative, but not for one second do I believe that medications do not help certain cases in it's own way. I somewhat agree that it seems everyone uses such psychological states as "excusses" to validate their own issues, but I do not believe in any way that Scientology is valid in it's beliefs. I think that if you believe ADHD is a fake condition, then believe that, DON'T GO AND MAKE A DAMN RELIGION THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH A HIGHER POWER, BUT AN OPINION. Don't go...... They'll try to brain wash you..... Tell her to go jump on her band wagon and leave you alone..... She's probably crazy anyways, and from what you told us that she wants to do(Thetins in your system? WTF?) it sounds like a ritual killing or something, better safe then sorry, let her be crazy by herself.

As the fiance' of a former Scientologist, I would highly suggest running like hell from your neighbor. She means well but she is part of a cult that is EXTREMELY anti- anything having to do with psychiatry or any medication that might have any effect that way..

It sounds as though the medication has been helping you, if I were you I would go with that.....

If you would like to know more about what Scientology REALLY is, I would suggest www.xenu.net

Be well

Be true to yourself and what has worked for you. Your neighbor may be well intentioned, but you have the proof of your own experience. I personally believe ADD is over-diagnosed and meds aren't always needed, but if you are also in therapy that helps you change the way you manage your life, and it's been that successful, you do not need to listen to this person's judgmental and non-science-based talk.

People have DIED from listening to Scientologists tell them or coerce them into stopping their medications. Go to scientology-kills.org to see specific cases. Don't stop your ADD meds unless your personal physician tells you to, and certainly DO NOT stop your asthma inhaler!!!

The things about that is that they do not believe in post-partum either! let me and Brooke Shields tell you...it is real!! And so is ADD....I believe that people should be able to believe as they wish. When they start forcing it on other people that is when it crosses from religion to clut...just ask the branch dividians.

Scientology was a religion made up by a man that wrote science fiction novels....i believe.
Doctors can prove that ADD is really an issue. So, ignore the quack next door. If what you are doing works for you that is all that matters.

Wow, I think I could use some of that stuff. If anyone doesn't agree with your choices in life, I say tough bananas. You don't need their judgment, you do what's healthy for you.

Personally, I see Scientology as a scam, I'm a skeptic in most things - don't fall for it!
