Make sure you have a bedtime routine: bath/shower, teeth brushing, and reading helps to relax kids. Make sure they have time to settle down from their day. At 9 years old he/she is old enough to know that they have to stay in bed, whether they can sleep or not. Make sure he/she has books, or something quiet to do when they wake up. If she/he has a sleeping disorder the situation needs to be brought up to the doctor!

Is it that they won't and get out of bed all night or is it that they really can't calm down enough to fall asleep? Are they afraid of he dark...maybe put a night light in there.

This was recommended by Dr. Phil. A night time video for kids...supposed be top notch in helping them to fall asleep. Here's the link

I find that giving a bath 2 hrs before bedtime helps my kids 3, 8, 13 to relax and go to sleep easier. Try not letting your kids play any video games or cartoons an hour before bed (they seem to direct wire their brains on high gear and they can't stop thinking) Try letting them read a book, or draw, to help their minds slow down a little. If your child has hyperactivity during the day then, their minds just can't slow down and they have racing thoughts and sleepless nights....that was my 13 y/o problem at age 5-8 and we found out he had ADHD. It could be medical and worth researching. Good luck.

There are two things that have helped my kids sleep. I've given the boys (9 and 10) 1/2 mg of melatonin as well as valerian (not simultaneously) to get them into a good sleep pattern. Naturally you may want to check with a doctor. Melatonin hasn't been researched on kids, but its a natural sleep hormone your body produces anyway. Valerian has been used on babies in Germany for years.
Naturally a consistent bed time is important.
If these don't work, it may be the sign of a sleep disorder.

If your child has trouble falling asleep -

Make sure they are tired at bedtime. Don't allow your child to participate in exciting, adrenaline-pumping activities right before bed. Make sure your child goes to bed the same time every night, and gets up at about the same time every morning. If he or she is nine years old, they should probably go to bed between eight and nine P.M. Little kids need lots of sleep, and if he's not getting it it'll show in schoolwork and such.

If your child can't stay asleep, that is, if he goes to bed, falls asleep, and wakes you up at midnight -

Ask them about nightmares. He or she may have night terrors. Make sure that they are comfortable and safe in their room; if the child is afraid of the dark get them a nightlight. (I'm nineteen and I'm STILL afraid of the dark. Psychologically there's nothing wrong with it, and I know there are people who basically tell their kids 'the dark isn't scary, get over it' and these children develop serious mental problems.) If you can't divine the cause of her inability to stay asleep, look into a child psychologist, or at least ask your pediatrician.

Sleeping problems in children are most commonly associated with bad nightmares, insecurity, too much sleep during the day/not enough, and abuse. I know that no one ever wants to think about it, but many children find themselves unable to sleep out of fear of a late-night visitor. Again, my best advice is to talk to your pediatrician and make sure your child is safe and comfortable and tired in his bed at night. Some people are just insomniacs; however, I personally disapprove of medicating children for such problems, because of the issues it can cause later in life. If your child is already on any long-term medications, ask your doctor about those too - they might be having an effect.

Good luck.

I think your 9 yrs old child is suffering from any kind of stress
or depression. It may be for other reasons also. Please talk
to him/her. Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary
and medical problems. By making small lifestyle changes
like having a fixed daily routine, relaxing and eating properly,
insomnia can be cured. I found the information at

Sometimes my 10 year old son gets up in the middle of the night to watch Cartoon Network. It really annoys me. I can't sleep if I hear him up. Ask your child if they are stressed about something that is usually why kids can't sleep.

It is either physical or a mental issue. Either way, you need to go to the doctor first. It could be diet, a malady of some kind, or it could be stress.

It could also be lack of exercise playing a role.

Get to the pedatrician asap.

some kids just don't. Do all you can to make it a relaxing time, and tell her she is not to come to you at all and only to get out of bed to go to the toilet. Hopefully if she has no stimulation of other people she will learn to roll over and go back to sleep
Replace with HE if its your son
