adopt - adopt - adopt!
It's the most amazing feeling on can experience.
If your after a mutt - local shelters of ASPCA are a super source

Purebreed - AKC's have rescure groups for almost all breeds.

Both sources will have updated shots, medical care, some will spay or neuter them aslo.

Look at all aspects:
How much time will I have to spend with the dog?
How much time to groom the dog?
How much money for food, medical expense, dog sitting?
Adult or puppy - puppies are so cute, but patience is needed for training.
Large and small breeds really differ on this one.

Do I want a dog that does tricks? Learning ability is different in all breeds - some rank higher then other.

You want a dog that fits you - do some research on differnt breeds

Here's a quick quiz to help you choose which breed of dog might be best

With any dog - treat them how you would want to be treated

If you just want a pet to love and are not interested in breeding a purebred, try your local spca. They have a lot of great pets that just need a loving home. They are already spayed/nutured, and have been checked out by a vet. so they won't have any health problems, and most are already potty trained. Every once in a while they will get puppies, you just have to check with them regulargly. Now, another option is to try your local paper. There are many dogs/puppies listed in the classified. Remember to keep in mind that a puppy requires lots and lots of time and money, where as an adult dog is much easier to afford, they only require love time.

Adopt from the SPCA. It's good because you are giving a dog that needs a home a nice place to stay and you know at least something of the medical record of the animal. Sometimes pet stores sell you sick animals

First, really think about it. Do you have the proper set up for one. Do you have time to train, housebreak, groom, trim toenails, play with the dog? Where will you keep it when you are gone? Can you afford the innoculations, heart worm and flea preventatives?

Do you know how to train a dog? Are you willing to go to obedience classes to learn how to train a dog?

etc etc.......then, do your homework on type of dog that will suit you

find a local animal shelter.
however keep in mind that having a dog takes a lot of responsibility and money. they need to go to the vet, they need lots of food, they need a place to run, and they need plenty of attention. so if you cant supply all of these things and more, than you might want to settle for a smaller pet, maybe a caged one, until you are prepared to handle a dog.
