Just curious. I listened exclusively to Christian music until I was 17.
Interesting, as I'm an atheist now.

So what are your thoughts?

Secular music is about all I listen to. BUT, in middle school, before I renounced Christianity for over ten years, I used to listen to only Christian music.
Now I listen to a little bit of everything. I like some Christian music, like Steve Taylor, Newsboys, and Petra.
My favorite bands are Pink Floyd and Nightwish, though, strangely enough. And yet I'm a Christian. Hmm.

We listen (children and I) mostly to Christian metal. We can tell a difference in how we feel if we listen to something like NIN or Slip Knot.
Considering satan was created for praise and worship it is easy to see how he can have an influence in secular music.
I am not saying that listening to the White Stripes is an evil thing to do but I believe it is important to really hear to what you are listening to. I am amazed at many of the messages in some of the music.
Honestly.......I'd much rather listen to Norma Jean or Flyleaf than most of the mess out there. When your listening to them really hear their messages.
I believe music has an incredible influence on people. We should pay attention to what we are allowing to influence our minds.

I know what you are asking, but I don't usually separate music into 'religious' and 'secular', except when it comes to themes and lyrics. I believe music is something given to us by God for our enjoyment, and that any style of music can be enjoyed by Christians and atheists alike. I do think it is important to take care, though in listening. Some types of music, and some lyrical content, can have an adverse affect on a person - and that varies for each of us. For instance, I listen to an artist that is very sarcastic in his message. I enjoy the music and the messages, but listening too long tends to make me more sarcastic. Hope my opinions help.

I don't neccessarily like it when secular music plays...but if the beat is good, and the lyrics are not exactly easy to memorize...I might like to listen to it on occasion. Now, if you have the words implanted in your mind 24/7 and you cannot simply stop thinking about what the song talks about, then I suggest you find a less-secular song to listen to...or just switch to another genre.

I, personally, on occasion, listen to music with secular-like lyrics, and so far, it has only bothered me a couple times.

But that's just me.

i am a christian and i think some secular music is really good...but most of the mainstream stuff just isn't...everyone talks so materially (sing about material things that don't really matter in the long run), so some of the newer stuff i just don't get into. but sometimes christian music can be too wholesome for me...i like something in the middle....like those songs where you know they're talking about god, but they dont say so specifically - so they could be talking about someone else they love as well.

There is so much secular music in this world that it's almost impossible not to hear and love some of it. I'm a practicing Christian and love a lot of secular music!

It depends on the words most of the time. I like country and bluegrass but I often don't care for the lyrics. But some lyrics are fine. It depends so much also on the music itself. Does it uplift me or not. I also love classical music.I don't listen to satanic music, period. Some of the lyrics of some rockbands if they are listened to backwards are really demonic and about death.Don't know any examples right now bec I don't like rockmusic anyway.

Not all music should be listened to. As a Christian, you should be aware and careful of the music you place within your mind so that it will not feed to plant an "unholy seed". The words of a song if there are any should be clean and should in someway praise God or speak of joy love and peace.

What exactly do you mean by secular music?

But as for me, I am a catholic priest in training (so to speak) and when I have to choose music, I look for relevant lyrics, or creating the right athmosphere. As for what style it is, it couldn't matter less.
I had no problem using Linkin Park or Coldplay, as long as the meaning is in line with what I need to say, it's okay

PS even Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen can be used, despite the sexual ambiguity

Some is good
Some is bad

I am curious though...you used to listen to Christian music? Were you a Christian?

Just think, if you are wrong ( becoming an atheist ) will it be worse for you knowing you had salvation in the palm of your hands before changing your mind.

Anyway, I hope you come back soon...........
Have a goodun.....
