A derivative of Zimmer, Zimmerman, is a common Jewish name. Actually, there are many surnames which Jews of German origin share with non-Jewish Germans, such as Stern and Stein.
By the way, Zimmerman is Bob Dylan's REAL last name:)

Zimmerman is a Jewish surname, so perhaps it became Zimmer when your ancestors got to Germany?
