I babysit my nephew and we were watching Nickelodeon. A commercial for a UFC or boxing match or something came on and it was entirely in Spanish. The next commercial break, there was a commercial for Cox Communications also entirely in Spanish. I thought he had switched it to another channel so I turned it, but it was still Nickelodeon?

Considering English is the official language here, isn't that a little insulting? They already have Spanish channels. I do speak Spanish and came here legally from Mexico but thats a little extreme like forcing a foreign language on people.

It's absolutely insulting, because they're not targeting their market by airing Spanish commercials on English channels. What they're doing is alienating the person that's watching the channel to begin with. This isn't a matter of "choice", because I have no Co tool kvetch the commercials that air over the duration of a show and telling me to get off my "a** and go do something else" is asinine and arrogant, because I have a right to an opinion and I also have the capacity to be offended, whether you like it or not. It makes absolutely no sense to play a Spanish commercial on a channel being watched by people who understand English; it's rude, really and completely unnecessary. Even if someone bilingual is watching, they'd understand the commercial in English all the same, without the inconsiderate disregard to English-speaking Americans. Subtle indoctrination. It's a pointless practice, except to condition people to accept it as normal, a little bit at a time. If you are a legal immigrant or a birth-right citizen of an illegal immigrant and your response is to tell English-speaking American citizens to deal with it or get over it, you have some nerve expecting accommodation for language barriers, to turn around and disrespect me for not wanting to be intentionally ignored by ways of unnecessary language barriers that serve no actual purpose to the Spanish-speaking community. It's disgusting to watch people act entitled, demanding respect and consideration from the very same people they're disrespectful and inconsiderate to. How embarrassing.

English is America's language ... if you want another language, you can find a channel that caters to your nationality. But it's annoying for Spanish to pop up on English channels, even if it is only a commercial. I won't use the product. If you're here in the USA, you should learn the language -- English.

More and more spanish speaking immigrants are watching typical American channels whether they understand or not and for what ever the reason. So in order for a company to reach a certain demographic they have the commercials in that language so that public understands and gets "hooked". They show them occasionally and subtle so the rest of the watching community says nothing. See with all the Arizona immigration hoopla those immigrants have migrated east, etc.

I think it's pathetic both ways.

First of all, most Spanish speakers don't understand an iota of English, but the companies from Spanish-speaking countries _themselves_ advertise sometimes in English because they think that's "cool" since most people don't even understand what's being said.

And then the other way around it's also awful. Why do they need commercials in Spanish when most Spanish-speaking viewers don't understand the rest of the TV program? That's ridiculous. Bad advertising strategy. Bad taste.

Wanda is completely right, if you go to any Spanish-speaking country you will also have English commercials (even if you give me thumbs down because truth hurts you). Also, notice that it's English Channels who accept the Spanish commercials, it's American Companies that show the Spanish commercials. So what do us, Latinos, have anything to do with this? It's your own people that's trying to adapt to us!

That's weird. I do watch Spanish channel because my husband is Mexican but I have never seen any English commercials, or vise versa when watching English channels. Maybe it is the state and city you are in. I live in Portland Oregon, and there are alot of Mexicans here. That's really strange.

Not insulting at all, and I have dish latino...we have channels that are in spanish...like MTV en espanol, or even movie channels that are dubbed into Spanish, maybe he had that. If not, it doesnt really matter. They are a company and they are free to advertise in any language they choose. It just means that hispanic people are big customers for that company. I applaude them for having good business sense!

Good for you making the legal switch. As for the language, sadly that's just free enterprise, whoever wants to pay the most gets the airtime. I would suggest writing your local cable provider and tell them your concerns about keeping spanish commercials strictly to the spanish channels.
