What kind of question is this? Obviously your professor is ether a classical economist or is invested somehow in nuclear power. It is true that power produced from a nuclear plant is cleaner and has a much smaller mass. However, it is the "figuring out" where to put the waste, and how to mark the sight for more than ten thousand years.

The only unsafe part of them is how to dispose of the waste left after the energy is extracted through fission.
There is normally a huge amount of radioactive material (usually uranium) that is incredibly difficult to hide safely.
They are safe because there is not direct pollution from the energy process and it is a pretty safe way of releasing energy as we are able to control the process easily.

One of the big drivers for nuclear power development is that it does not produce carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas pollutant linked to global warming. However, nobody has figured out a good solution for the radioactive waste disposal problem.

They don't give off coal or fuel smoke, they don't interfere with the natural flow of rivers, and -- with present designs -- they don't release radioactivity into the environment. (As the old joke goes, "more people died in Teddy Kennedy's car than at Three Mile Island".) The Chernobyl disaster was a result of using an unsafe reactor design which the Russians decided on to cut costs. Further, they don't require coal miners to risk their lives in caveins or catch Black Lung disease.

Generally, it is percieved the other way around.
Thought, they are relatively safe as long as they don`t waste unusable nuclear fuel.. yet again, it is the only reliable and powerfull source of power for modern society so far.
Google it man!
