The commandments are good and holy. In fact, they are God's standard for a person to reach God. The problem people have is the fact that there was on one man that ever lived that could keep them and He was God manifested in the flesh. The Lord Jesus Christ came to earth as a man so He could die for our sins and fulfill the law. The 10 commandments were only given to the Nation of Israel. The gentiles never had the law but we know right from wrong. Romans 2: 14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: The only thing the law can do today is show us that we are sinners. Galatians 3: 24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Galatians 3: 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. Today we are saved by grace through faith and not by the works of the law. Romans 3: 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Galatians 2: 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

and honoring thy father and mother works really well for the children of abusive parents who put them in graves

Not AGAINST any of them, just wish I could follow them more closely than I do at times.
