I can't think of a single person who would function as the best model. People like Christ, Socrates, Lincoln, Walt Whitman, Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King, Jr, and Gandhi come to mind. Most of them had their flaws, which is the human condition.

If you are asking for a symbol an atheist could accept, that doesn't rule out Christ. Even if only seen as a man, he would still have stood for wisdom, peace, love, and forgiveness, qualities we desperately need today.

But if you insist on a more secular model, it's a tie between Lincoln and Gandhi. Great men. Gandhi has an edge because he made his stand while proving peace could be the greatest weapon of all.

Divine intelligence is connected to each individual human. A prophet merely points to a way toward a new way of perceiving the Divine.

I'm an agnostic, but I see it as this:
Do all you can to help the maximum number of people possible in any given situation.

It is more virtuous to create heaven on earth than to simply wait to get there one day.

We have it backwards we think the more spiritual we become the more human we will be. Jesus proved the more human he was the more spiritual he became. Let the word's and work's of Jesus be evident in our lives.
