The Romans crucified 100,000's of Jews. Jesus was one of them.
When the Roman crucified someone they placed a sign over the victims head to let everyone know what their "crime" was.
In Jesus' case, his crime was being "King of the Jews". This was a captial offence in the Roman Empire, since only Caesar was king.
The sign above Jesus was a put there to mock him.

Because Jesus was a Jew. While on the cross, the Romans put a sign above him saying "King of the Jews". It was sarcastic and meant as an insulting joke since Jews were viewed down upon.

He is the Messiah. He is the one chosen by God to lead the Jews.
It would appear by the number of people who have converted or have been baptised He did a pretty good job convincing the vast majority.

For those who believe Jesus was the messiah, the title is appropriate as the messiah, according to the prophesies, will rise to be an earthly king.

Simply because he was a Jewish leader, and the Romans despised Jews.
