Confidentiality is important because it can save a nation, a business or a individual from severe embarrasment.

If you are a client of mine you do not need to know about my personal life, but you would want to know about my work experiences and qualifications as these relate to the services you'd be buying from me.

If I spent all the time ranting on about my personal life, I'd seem unprofessional, equally if I started blabbing about my contract with you and the fee to another organisation, you'd be pis-sed off that I was breaching confidentaility.

Certain information in the wrong hands can be damaging either to the person or others, it may also be used for criminal or other anti social activities. Would you wish your bank account details to no longer be confidential for example? Basically it is a form of protection to ensure that the right information is in what are judged to be the right hands, thus limiting the abusive use of information.
PS . Don't tell anybody this is strictly confidential!!!!!!!!

There are circumstances in law where confidentiality is of the utmost importance. For example - in English law the name of a minor may not be published in the press, even if it is read out in court by the clerk or judge or a lawyer. If a newspaper breaks this law its editor and staff will be held in contempt. The full might and majesty of the law - as in, The Queen versus the newspaper, will be brought to bear.

There are other areas of confidentiality - such as my will. It remains my property and is kept by my lawyer until I am dead. You have no right to see or read it.

simply put, no-one wants thier personal info thrown around do they ?, so this info is classed as confidential. Likewise information that has not yet been established as true, but could be useful to police etc is confidential, because it has no real truth to it per se, BUT may be correct and save your backsides !!!
and that info isn't for general release either !!

Certain situations call for confidentiality, like victims of a crime or just patients in a hospital, no one else needs to be aware of anyone elses problems. It is just a nice thing to have.

let's discuss things that are uncomfortable to talk about with strangers...let's all be open with each other and tell each other all about our problems...

that's why we need confidentiality.

there are many reasons. if you are a suspect in a crime, for instance child molestation, and an investigation clears you and arrests another, would you want your neighbors to know? remember there is always that one person who says (and believes) "he probably did it, but the cops let him go.
