Is it ok for me to go to businesses & ask to speak with the person in charge for ordering holiday greeting cards & gifts, then I would just drop off my business card with my web site on it & phone number.

that depends what is your business? Are you trying ot sell cards and gifts or are you trying to have them buy other people's cards and gifts through you? If you are selling you wil probibly want to take samples of your product and actually talk to them, not drop and run. If you just give it to them they will most likely throw it in the garbage without a second thought.

If you don't you will be very skinny and have thin kids.
Yes go out and talk with the gatekeeper how else are you going to have business. Standing on the side of the road with a sign some times works. Read 'Guerrilla Marketing' for other ideas how to introduce yourself to business.
Oh the only times when NO is important.
1. Your Mother says it.
2. Your spouse says it.
3. A police officer pointing a gun at you says it.

It's a trade off between being nice and being pushy. The person in charge is probably doing something else, thinking about something else, busy, and doesnt' want to be interrupted to go talk to some walk-in with some topic he or she wasn't thinking about.
BUT - as that walk-in, you gotta do something to get the word out. I'd leave a well made flyer instead. That's much less intrusive.

It is always OK to ask to speak to a person in charge, however that will mostly not going to happen. Be nice to the gatekeeper, that will get you to speak to the person in charge.
