Those jobs that require an applicant to submit to a polygraph as a condition of employment still can't MAKE you take it, however if you don't submit to one, they can then refuse to employ you.

Still other jobs, especially certain law enforcement jobs which require certain employees to have access to classified material may require someone who has already been hired to submit to a polygraph. Usually, the rules which govern how the test is to be administered, by whom, and under what conditions an employee may be required to do so are elaborately spelled out, and the employee will be required to agree to those conditions before accepting employment.

Still, refusing to take the polygraph is that employee's choice, but it may result in termination of employment.

A law enforcement officer can be forced to take a polygraph exam if it is the policy of the department, if the officer is suspected of committing a crime then the officer has the right too refuse the same as anyone who is accused or suspected of engaging in criminal activity.

Orrin Hatch (Utah, Rep) and Ted Kennedy (Mass, Dem) both worked very hard to ensure that lie detector tests would not be used in court to determine anyone's guilt, after Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald on TV, and passed a lie detector test.

You can have a sociopath believe in a scrambled version of reality, and that will say nothing about him in one of those tests.

No. Nor can anyone else. You may submit to a lie detector test either through legal negotiations or voluntarily. Lie detector tests are almost never admissible in court and are used primarily to eliminate suspects.

You can be asked to. However, any police department that heavily relies on these is idiotic. They are woefully easy to best, they taught us the tricks in college while I was studying criminal justice. Also, many cops are former military, and most of them are taught to beat them. Unless there is a supoena for you to take a polygraph, you don't have to.
