How long should you wait to go from flirting to the next step?

And when you do want to go to the next step, how do you do it? This boy I like a lot always talks to me and flirts with me, and he asked me if I had a date for homecoming (after it was all over though) as if he just kind of noticed I showed interest. He sits next to me in a class I have, and he looks at me a lot but I try not to let him catch me looking at him. Anyways, we have a few flirtatious conversations (mostly about him being a cunning linguist and my amazing ability to suck on things (I finished a jawbreaker really fast) and about me coming off like I go to church every week) He's a bit punk culture wise, but says he gets laid often enough and that he can't just pull bitches out of his sleeve. I'm not too sure if he likes me. Anyways, I really like seeing him in that one class and I really want to do more with him, how should I hint at that more? (And yes, I ask a lot of questions about this, but it's fun and it's what I like to ask and read answers for)

go for him. if hes joking about "sucking on stuff" hes probly into you. he'd feel really uncomfortable if he wasn't during that conversation...
