I just got a new deaf Jack Russell who is 1 (Lexy). I have another Jack Russell who is 5 (crackers). I take Crackers with me to work and leave Lexy at home in the utility room with food and water and her crate so she can go in there and lay down. The only reason I don't bring Lexy with me is that she is new and I work for a family owned business, so my dad brings his dogs to work with him too. One of his dogs is a Jack Russell and he is very aggressive. Crackers and him fight sometimes and I have to step in and stop them. I don't want Lexy to get hurt. She just got spayed and she has stitches on her tummy. Am I being mean by taking Crackers to work and not Lexy? Is it ok to leave Lexy in the utility room for 8 hours? What does eveyone else do with their dogs when they go to work? I have always brought Crackers to work so I don't know any different. I'm starting Nursing school soon so I'm going to have to leave Crackers and home part of the time while I'm at school.

There is nothing wrong with those wire crates you can get real cheap at wal-mart. They work excellent. We had a Golden retreiver trained so well she still sleeps in it! As long as you put a soft bed in there and let them out to eat and do there business, then there is no harm, it's not abuse.

I think it is in Lexy's best interest that she heals before letting her play. I also wouldn't leave Crackers at home in the same room with Lexy until she heals.

Yes, it's ok to leave Lexy in the room for eight hours as long as she has water and a place to potty.

Every dog is different. Most of what I have read says to actually crate the dog. You put them in a confined environment where they cannot run around much, and do not leave food or water. This actually makes it easier to hold it for longer periods of time. Now that is just our way of doing it. If it works to leave her in the utility room, great. With there being food and water there, I would leave a "puppy" pad. These are the pads you can buy which actually encourages them to go on it. This way if she needs to go while you are gone she can. As for if you are mean in your approach, no way. It is very responsible of you to think of Lexy's best interests when going to work. She is at a disadvantage due to her disability, and you do not need to expose her to that. But there is no reason your other dog needs to be "punished" due to Lexy being deaf either. I think you are being very responsible.

You are going to need to wire-crate train the dog. It will make your dog feel safer as dogs are denning animals. All dogs feel safer in an area made for that size. A bed and chewy toys will make Lexy secure. The danger with leaving a dog in a large utility room is that a bored dog will get into things that could be dangerous to their health. It is not cruel under any circumstances to crate train a dog. However, when you get home from work, take her out to potty, bring her in and give her the attention she deserves.

i think lexy will be fine. you say she's in a room with a crate, so she has a place to walk around, lie down and has access to food and water. as long as there is nothing in the room with her that she can get into (chemicals, things she could chew on if she gets bored), then she should be ok. just make sure to put some toys in there with her if she gets bored. you're making a wise decision if she was just spayed to not put her around an aggressive dog that might unintentionally pull her stitches out.

I have a Jack Russell also and he is very hyper when left alone but then he is 10 and spoiled and hates to stay home. I take him to my parents everyday to be babysat. If I had known that he would learn to love his crete like a lot of people tell me now I would have done it too. We are gone for 8 hours a day also. Apparently they call that their "home" and if they are scared, upset or whatever they go in there for their own space.

When Lexy is ready to go too then take turns but show her more lovin at night while she is alone all day. Pets are like kids, they are so dare loveable.

I think your reasons behind leaving Lexi at home is correct at this point, but I don't understand how she can be left for 8 hours without a chance to relieve herself. Kudos for having her spayed though.
When nobody will be at home at our place for that length of time, our dogs just use their doggie door. They can come & go as they please. Our dogs usually go where we go though, as long as it NOT too cold or Over 70 degrees outside. I don't take them all just running errands & such, but when we vacation, we do take them...

Its ok!!! I know some people who leave them in the crate for 8 hours. He will be fine as long as he has plenty of food and water.
