Center of the Torah's moral teaching ---- God

Without the Torah there would be no Judaism - the meaning is quite simple and correct. Everytime any group of Jews has tried to tamper with or discount the Torah, within a few generations they've largely disappeared. It's happening as we speak as non-affiliated, Reform and Conservative Jews are being lost to intermarriage, secularism and other religions....so much so they don't even identify as Jews.

At the centre - the 10 commandments.
If you took away the Old Testament from the Bible there would be no Judaism. It is in the Torah that the promises were made to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, also to David and a number of others. They are the basis of God's dealings with Israel.

1. this is actually a common parable. about 50 b.c.e. there was a guy named rabbi hillel, and he was approached by a gentile who said he would convert if rabbi hillel could recite the whole torah while standing on one foot. the rabbi stood on one foot and said: "what is hateful to you, do not do unto others. that is the whole of the torah, all the rest is just commentary. now go and study."

there is also a common jewish saying: "omar rabbi akiva, v'ahavta l'reacha kamocha. zeh klal gadol batorah." "rabbi akiva says, love your neighbour as yourself. this is the greatest rule of the torah."

2. without the torah, there would be no judaism. judaism only began when the torah was received. the torah is the outline of judaism - all the jewish laws, holidays, and rituals are instructed to us in the torah. if we had never gotten the torah with all of these things, there would be no such thing as the jewish religion, since it was created by the torah.

EDIT

"At the centre - the 10 commandments."

in judaism, the 10 commandments are not commandments. there are 613 commandments in judaism, plus 7 for the non-jews.

OK; I 100% agree with this statement. Here's why:

G-d made the Jewish people the Torah as a book of laws, teaching them how to be Jewish; all the basic things, like keeping the Sabbath, keeping Kosher, etc.

SO, the Torah is what Judaism is based on; what makes us Jewish; what G-d gave us to show that we are his nation.

So yea....the statement is completely true.
