My passport is getting full and I'm going to get another. Will it have the same number? I used the passport number of the first one on various applications, and I want to make sure the second one will bear the same number.

When you renew or replace your passport, the US government will issue a new passport with a new number.

you dont have to get a new passport - you can get additional pages on your current one to keep the same number:

IF: Then:
1. The visa/stamp pages in your passport are full or close to full (less than two (2) to four (4) blank pages) Mail completed form DS-4085, Application for Additional Visa Pages, with your passport to the following address:
If using USPS:

National Passport Processing
P.O. Box 13408
Philadelphia, PA 19101-3408

If using other delivery service:

National Passport Processing
ATTN: Department 3408

2. You travel extensively and need a new passport You may request more Visa pages in your passport at no additional cost. To do so, please attach a signed request for additional Visa pages to be added to your application. Note: 48-page passport s are no longer available in the U.S. or abroad.

NOTE:
There is no fee for this service unless you require expedited service.

Why get a new one if it's not expired? I sent mine to the embassy while I was in NZ, and they added A to Z in the middle of 1 to 23. If I remember correctly, if was even free. Great to have roots to leave from. Have some nice trips!
