It is really interesting that so far, the majority of you say that you tip regardless of service. Do you not think that this is signalling that service doesn't matter? Aren't there other poorly paid occupations where people work very hard but are not tipped for their work? Why this social blackmail; that we feel we are obligated to tip regardless of service? Aren't we sending the wrong signals when we get surly or poor service and then turn around and tip??

I tip according to the level of service. I tend to tip 20% for good service, less for substandard service. I have left without leaving a tip. I had one waitress follow me to the parking lot and ask why I didn't leave her a tip and I told her that I thought the service was lousy and I wouldn't give her a tip for poor service. She called me a name and walked away! Needless to say, I never ate at that restaurant again!

No one deserves an automatic tip. It must be earned.

There are many factors that should be considered when determining the amount of a tip. Tips should be given proportional to the effort put out by the server. For average service, I give 15% and go up(or down) from there. I generally tip a little lower at a buffet as less effort is required by the server.

There are times when a restaurant may be short staffed and busy so the server cannot give the attention they would wish but they are busting tail trying to do their best. I take this into consideration.

If I see that the server is not very busy and I am not getting good service, I do not give a good tip. For very bad service or rudeness I give a tip of two cents - this is notice to the server that their service was not worth two cents.

I normally do tip. As for "should you?" that is up to the individual. If the service was horrendous, I would leave no more than 5 percent of the bill. That way, I don't have to feel bad about not leaving a tip, and the size of the tip says it all. Of course, if the service was really, really atrocious I would complain to the manager and anyone else within earshot. But I believe that the smaller the tip the bigger the insult to the waitperson for the terrible service. Let's hope it never comes to that.

Not if it is really BAD service. In some restaurants the tips are already figured into the final bill.

You can leave a little something if you liked your server but if they aren't nice, or forget stuff, etc. don't leave them a tip. In fact, I liked the one suggestion to leave a note or drop some comments into the suggestion box. MENTION to someone that the reason you didn't leave a tip is because the service was lousy.

Servers are not ENTITLED to tips--it's a nice extra bit when they render GOOD service. If they want tips, they should give GOOD service.

I'll get of my soapbox now. Hope this helps.

Yes, I tip regardless. Your tip reflects your service. If your service is great, you get 5-6 dollars. If your service is unexceptable you get a dollar or two. Also, I follow the 15% rule. Even if your service was horrible, you still deserve a little money for your "services". It's just that your pay will reflect how well you did. Also, I'll leave a note [good or bad] saying why I really enjoyed your services or why do didn't satisfy me. Also, I might tell that person personally. If it's negative, they need to know so they can possibly correct their work ethics to serve their customers better. If it's positive, it's just nice to know that they are appreciated.

If the person offers poor service, I will not tip, and will tell them why I did not leave them anything, and have been known to talk to the management and tell them as well. Now, If I get great service, I have been known to tip as much as a $20 bill if I am pleased.

You bring up a very good point. I tip less for poor service and if the service is really bad, I don't tip and I don't go back. I've always disagreed with the restaurants paying less than minimum, expecting customers to make up the difference.

I tip based on service and that's it.we went out a few weeks ago and this freakin waitress was talkin loudly at my son (9) to hurry up and order. I was pissed and then he ordered a omelet that had mushrooms in it and asked if they could make it without because he is allergic she said fine when they brought the food mushrooms were all over the omelet. So we asked to take it back and make a new one they just picked the mushrooms off the top the ones they could see and reheated it in the microwave. We got the freakin manager and he gave us a 50%discount and got my sons meal right but I didnt tip her anything.
You know what makes me mad is those restaurants that add the tip to the bill-that pisses me off. A tip is not required but I guess some places think they are.

Wait staff is paid a very low wage. The major part of their income comes from tips. If the service is bad, you should tell the manager, and not leave a tip. If the service is decent you should leave at least 15%, if it's excellent, you might want to leave more.

I do tip depending on the service I receive.

Really rude and crappy service: 0% and a note telling them to find a job where they are happy

Poor service but the order was right and nothing was spit in: 10%

Good service with a smile: 15%

Great service, conversation, smile, etc: 20%
